Many houses around the globe have been rumored to house real ghosts and monsters. Although some of these have been shown to be hoaxes, a few have remained to be the centerpiece of the scariest tales through the decades.

Perhaps, these five scariest houses in the world have gained the reputation simply because the stories are true.

1. The Beechworth Lunatic Asylum

Located in Victoria, Australia, the mental asylum was open to patients from 1867 to 1995, with 9,000 patients dying within the premises throughout the period. At one point, about 1,200 patients resided in the area. According to stories, there are several ghosts of the dead insane patients haunting the asylum’s halls to this day. Tourists are actually welcome to take a night tour, based on a report by Salon.com.

2. Chateau de Chateaubriant

The chateau is located in France and was built during the 11th century. It was said that Francoise de Foix became the mistress of King Francis, so her husband, Jean de Laval, locked her in a room and poisoned her. Stories surfaced that the ghost of Francoise de Foix wandered the halls of the ancient house, particularly every Oct. 16, which was the day she was killed.

3. The Victorian Mansion on Temple Street

Located on Temple Street in Detroit, the Victorian mansion was rumored to be the venue where three priests were murdered in 1942. According to neighbors, they could hear the ghosts across the street, according to an article Business Insider.

4. The Oliver Family Mansion

The mansion is located in Chester, Pennsylvania and was said to be haunted after the whole Oliver clan disappeared without a trace in 1898. To this day, no one ever discovered where the Oliver family went or what became of them. According to local residents, they would occasionally spot the family in the windows of the old house.

5. The Amityville House

Located on Long Island, the Lutz family only stayed in the house for a few days before fleeing in terror because of ghost hauntings. According to talks, the house was the site of a mass murder before the Lutz family moved in.
