Nick Cannon is putting the blame on the producers of the show American Idol saying they are responsible for the escalating tension between his wife Mariah Carey and AI co-judge Nicki Minaj.

In an interview with KTLA, Cannon came to the rescue of his wife and said Carey already had sensed that Fox would milk and exploit the ongoing feud between her and Minaj. He said his wife feared that producers would use the feud to divert attention away from the contestants instead.

"My wife, foreseeing all of this, tried to tell the network. She said 'I don't think this is going to work, I'm afraid," Cannon disclosed.

He said his wife accepted the offer to do the show because she is a long time fan of the franchise and believes in the "American Idol" brand, but most definitely would not want to turn the feud into the next major Hollywood issue.

"This is going to turn into one of those reality shows. I did not sign up to be on 'Love and Hip Hop," Mariah had told Cannon.

"It's kinda unfortunate because when you see someone like my wife who tries to remain classy and tries to take the high road," said Cannon. "It feels like everybody else around it, including the network and the producers try to feed into this sound bite drama.

"People love that show for the contestants and the story and discovering a new star. That's why my wife did it - to connect with the contestants, But when they feed all this other stuff into it, that's not what she's about," Cannon added.

Earlier, Cannon already implied that it was the AI producers who actually leaked to TMZ the video showing Carey and Minaj in a fight during the auditions.

"If you ask my opinion, I've produced tons of television, and I don't know anybody who can stand with a camera phone right in front of the monitor and record it and nobody say anything, and then it just magically gets on TMZ," Cannon said in an interview with The View.

Cannon is the host of "America's Got Talent" also airing on Fox.

According to Cannon, his wife will probably not make an appearance anymore in the next season because of "Idol's" instability. The show has been suffering from record low ratings for some time now, prompting the producers to plan some overhauling for season 13.

Several sources say, however, that both Carey and Minaj will most likely not be asked to return by the producers.
