Andre Agassi Says Serena Williams Is The ‘Greatest Ever’
Is Serena Williams the greatest female tennis player? Many believe that Williams is the greatest player of her era. Recently, former World No. 1 Andre Agassi has voiced his opinion about the 19-time grand slam champion’s accomplishments and said that he would be even pleased to see the top-ranked female athlete surpass his wife Steffi Graf’s grand slam record.
Williams only trails Graf’s grand slam record by three more. Graf had 22 grand slam titles before she retired in 1999. Williams, on the other hand, has 19 grand slam titles up her sleeves. The American won her 19th grand slam title at the 2015 Australian Open.
According to Agassi, his wife doesn’t really worry much about losing her grand slam record. Agassi said that Graf has done the best that she could until her retirement from the sport in 1999.
“She (Graf) was thrilled with her career, she had no regrets, she did everything she could do and that’s all she ever cared about, but what Serena is doing is remarkable,” Agassi told Reuters TV. “She’s (Williams) arguably the greatest ever, it would be easy to argue that regardless of 22 or not.”
Agassi, who won eight grand slam titles during his career, further said Graf’s previous stats aren’t safe since records are made to be broken. He added that it would even be a “beautiful thing to watch” Williams break Graf’s 22 grand slam titles record.
Graf dominated the sport from 1987 to 1999. She won 22 grand slam titles in the Open era, which is the most number of grand slam titles that a female or male athlete has ever won in the sport. Graf won seven Wimbledon, six French Open, five U.S. Open, and four Australian Open titles. She retired from the sport in 1999, when she was a little over 30 years old.
At 33, Williams shows no sign of slowing down. She has won five Wimbledon, two French Open, six U.S. Open, and six Australian Open titles. She has also previously spoken about her desire to equal Graf’s 22 grand slams mark.
Williams is tipped to rule the next grand slam event at Wimbledon in the current season. She is also a top contender at the U.S. Open where she is the reigning champion. Her next tournament is the Indian Wells Masters. Williams returns to the tournament, where she also had her first win against Graf in the 1999 final, after 14 years.
