Apple has always used displays made by Samsung for its smartwatches, but rumours now have it the new iPhone 7 due in the fall of 2016 will have OLED screens made by the South Korean tech giant.

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are praised for its ability to produce exceptional lighting, and this is why Apple plans to have OLEDs in its next smartphone, the iPhone 7. Despite swirling rumors this move to use OLEDs from Samsung is inevitable, Apple has yet to decide whether it will settle for Samsung or not, reported Christian Post.

LG, which like Samsung is both a smartphone competitor and supplier, has so far supplied screen technology to Apple, but it seems Samsung will replace LG soon.

Apple prefers using LCD screens in its iPhones but has now come on board with OLEDs. Switching to OLEDs will bring better colour reproduction, wider viewing angles, deeper blacks and excellent colour contrast.

For now, Apple has a huge US$1.4 billion investment in a Japan Display Inc. (JDI) plant to supply LCD screens, and this plant is expected to start operations in 2016. Japanese sources said Apple will still use LCD displays from JDI even if it decides to use Samsung OLEDs in November.

If rumours are true, the iPhone 7 will have major changes apart from the new OLED display. But some say the switch to OLEDs might not occur in the iPhone 7 but in the iPhone 7s, reported Forbes.

Meanwhile, the iPhone 7 processor will be supplied by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., according to China’s Commercial Times.
