If the reaction that greeted him at the Sydney Metro Theatre was anything to go by, Robbie Williams is set to bring the house down at tonight's ARIA Awards.
Though it was supposed to be a low-key gig, the singer appeared taken aback by the thunderous response. Last night's show marked only the second time everyone's favorite cheeky Brit has sung live following a nearly three year hiatus.
His performance proved that he had lost none of the energy and verve that had made him a fan favorite with a stellar presentation of crowd-pleasers that mixed old hits Rock DJ, Feel and Come Undone with newer numbers like Bodies.
Speaking at a press conference later, the pop star was candid about the self-destructive lifestyle he developed when the demands of a world tour took its toll on him 2006. He cited the 'unnatural situation' of being 'let out for two hours do the show' and being confined to a hotel the rest of the time for 9 months as one of the main reasons he 'lost the plot'.
Happily for Robbie, he met current girlfriend Ayda Fields around the same time. Having dedicated Won't Do That To You to her at the show, he credits the American actress for helping him on the road to recovery and keeping him on the straight and narrow. She'll no doubt be watching him proudly when he shares the stage with Keith Urban, Jessica Mauboy, Kate Miller-Heidke and the Temper Trap tonight.
