After garnering more attention than local musicians did for performing at the recent ARIAs, Robbie further cemented his presence in the public consciousness by proposing to longtime girlfriend Ayda Field on radio early this morning.
Although it initially started out as a lighthearted interview, the session turned as serious as things can get when Robbie Williams is involved. After host Jackie O of 2DayFM mentioned that Sydney had seen a few celebrity proposals, Robbie nonchalantly popped the question to Ayda after telling the audience about the most romantic things he'd ever done.
Reportedly, all those present were extremely surprised, to say nothing of the singer's die-hard fans around the world. Ayda, who was with Robbie in the studio for the interview, apparently recovered her composure quickly. She calmly accepted the proposal, and an ad hoc engagement ring was kindly provided by Jackie O, circumventing a potentially embarrassing situation.
The love story between Robbie and Ayda is hardly one of love at first sight. In the same interview, the pop star claimed he initially disliked the actress ('she was mental') when they first met on a blind date arranged by some mutual friends. It's funny how things work out in the end.
