Sam Worthington Signs On For Avatar Sequels

The actor has agreed to commit to the two sequels to sci-fi movie Avatar. There are comments that the plot of the sci-fi epic is akin to 'Dances With Wolves in space', although Rick Carter, the film's production designer, insists there are also influences from Tarzan and Apocalypse Now. He has also described it to director James Cameron as 'The Wizard of Oz meets Apocalypse Now'.

Director James Cameron had reportedly been planning to film the trilogy since 1994 but Sam was only tapped for the role of a paraplegic ex-Marine in 2007. Prior to this, Sam stole the limelight from Christian Bale in the underwhelming Terminator: Salvation movie.

He is also set to appear in The Debt with Helen Mirren, and Clash Of The Titans alongside Liam Neeson, Ralph Fiennes and Gemma Atherton in 2010.

Given the long gestation period of the first Avatar movie, set to open in December, Sam is under no illusions that its sequels may be equally long in the making, saying he believes he'll be 94 by the time it finishes. Based on his experience of the 14-month duration of filming, which saw the actor put in 18-hour days, he believes that the two sequels won't be finished until he's well into his twilight years.
