Google still linking to racist website

It is reported that Google has failed to remove search results that linked to a racist website aimed at Indigenous Australians despite requests from an Aboriginal man.

The search results linking to the site were removed on Friday night following complains by Stephen Watts to Google Australia and the Human Rights Commission.

"You can't just run down blackfellas anytime you like," he said.

But the web pages can still be found using similar search terms.

Lawyer George Newhouse says his client's complaint still stands and Google is yet to explain how their take down policy will work.

"Google seems to be agreeing but what does that mean?" he said.

He says Google only responded after the human rights complaint was lodged.

In a written response, a spokeswoman for Google Australia has told the ABC they responded to the complaint by removing the URLs from the search results, after referring to the "applicable law".

"We believe in being transparent about this process, and provide notice in our search results when we have removed URLs in response to a legal request," she said.

"In their place is a link... which catalogues these removals as well as the legal ground for the removal."
