Todd Lasance Admits Cocaine Possession, Dodges Conviction

The actor, who played Aden Jefferies in Channel Seven's long-running Home and Away series for 4 years, pleaded guilty to possession of cocaine at Sydney's Downing Center Local Court today. The charge stemmed from the actor's arrest at a King's Cross nightclub in December last year when he was caught with 0.36 grams of the drug.

The actor's admission kept proceedings brief and resulted in him receiving a 12-month good behaviour bond and a tongue-lashing from the magistrate. His lawyer, Chris Ford, said Lasance "deserved another chance" and that he had suffered enough from the intense media attention the case had attracted.

Despite glowing character references for Lasance, including two from Home and Away producer Geoffrey Nottage and director Cameron Welsh, Magistrate Graeme Henson felt tempted to "make an example" of Lasance, saying "You are in the entertainment industry... I don't feel entertained by your conduct here".

Known as a Section 10 bond, it is the most lenient penalty the actor could have hoped to receive. A conviction would have made it extremely difficult for the actor to break into the USA movie scene, whereas the Section 10 bond will delay his plans for departure from Australia by a year.

The magistrate in this case should have followed his first instinct. How do you explain to a young person, who loves and adores this actor; that his actions were wrong. Especially when a court can't even hand out consequences. Read my blog here: http://jelsrantandrave.blogspot.com/2010/01/todd-lasance-bad-example-for-young-fans.html

No conviction for Cocaine Possession just shows how flawed our justice system is? I'm sure if it was an ordinary Aussie who is not of celebrity status he would have been jailed. Double Standards don't you think?
