Anne Hathaway refused 'Alice' lead

07 February 2010 @ 04:24 pm AEST

Oscar-nominated actress Anne Hathaway turned down the lead role in Tim Burton's take on Alice in Wonderland because it was too similar to the role that launched her career. Hathaway shot to fame in The Princess Diaries where she played a long-lost princess. She told Britain's GQ magazine that she was tired of playing "a pretty girl in a fairy dress".

The Valentine's Day star was initially offered the role when the fantasy film was in its planning stages. After turning it down, she then expressed interest in the role of The White Queen - the character she now plays in the movie.

But when the studio executives got Burton on board, he already had a cast in mind that did not include Hathaway. Luckily, the other actress had scheduling conflicts and the studio recommended her for the character.

On her portrayal of The White Queen, Hathaway explains, "I wanted the Queen to be a cross between Debbie Harry, Greta Garbo, David Bowie with (a) little bit of the work of (American minimalist artist) Dan Flavin thrown in for good measure."

The role of Alice eventually went to Aussie native Mia Wasikowska who is making her Hollywood debut after playing a small role in Australian soap All Saints and a critically acclaimed performance in HBO's In Treatment.
