ATP star David Ferrer ties the knot in Valencia; Rafael Nadal attends Marc Lopez Mallorca wedding
David Ferrer and Marc Lopez joined the club of married tennis players as the two ATP stars tied the knot in separate ceremonies over the weekend. Ferrer got married on Saturday and Lopez on Sunday.
Ferrer, who currently ranks seventh in the world, previously announced his upcoming wedding to Marta Tornel by posting a selfie on Twitter last weekend. It was a picture of him with his father and Tornel with a caption that translates to: “Here’s a photo with my Dad and my future wife.”
According to Las Provincias, Ferrer and long-term partner Tornel married in a civil ceremony held at the Veles e Vents in Marina Real in Valencia. The wedding was reportedly attended by close family and friends.
Ferrer met Tornel through his coach Javier Piles. Tornel, an optician in Benifaio, is a close friend of Piles’ wife. Even though Tornel rarely talks to the press, she is often seen courtside watching and supporting Ferrer’s matches.
Meanwhile, Spanish doubles specialist Marc Lopez also tied the knot with long-time girlfriend Maria over the weekend. Fellow tennis superstar Rafael Nadal was in attendance to watch Lopez and Maria exchanged their weddings vows. Nadal was accompanied by girlfriend Maria Francisca Perello to the matrimonial event.
Ferrer and Lopez joined the likes of other tennis stars who have all tied the knot this year. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic married Jelena Ristic after winning the Wimbledon Championships. World No. 2 Andy Murray also tied the knot with Kim Sears in April.
In other news, Ferrer will headline the Qatar ExxonMobil Open next year where he is looking to defend his title against Nadal, Djokovic, and Tomas Berdych. ended the season as World No. 7. He won five titles at the Erste Bank Open (def. Steve Johnson 4-6 6-4 7-5), Malaysian Open (def. Feliciano Lopez 7-5 7-5), Abierto Mexicano Telcel (def. Kei Nishikori 6-3 7-5), Rio Open (def. Fabio Fognini 6-2 6-3) and Qatar ExxonMobil Open (def. Berdych 6-4 7-5).
