Matt Damon recently grabbed headlines after he supposedly suggested that gay actors should just get back in the closet. However, the actor defended his statements during an appearance on "The Ellen Show."

The actor shared his views on sexuality during an interview with The Guardian. Damon mentioned how it’s something that should remain a mystery especially with actors in Hollywood, since it could potentially have a negative effect on their careers. Unfortunately, his opinion was misconstrued as a suggestion that gay actors should just remain in the closet. In an interview on “The Ellen Show,” Matt defended his statements and agreed with Ellen that they were simply taken out of context.

“I was just trying to say actors are more effective when they’re a mystery, right? Then somebody picked it up and said that ‘I’d said gay actors should get back in the closet.’ It’s stupid. It’s painful when things get said that you don’t believe, you know?” Matt tells Ellen in the video below.

Ellen tells Matt that she was also surprised to hear about the news. However, she assured the actor that she didn’t believe it since she knows that he is “not that guy” who would say negative things about the gay community. To make light of the interview, Ellen jokes that she’s shocked to learn that he and Ben Affleck are not gay.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Damon talked about how his sexuality was questioned when he and Ben were working on “Good Will Hunting.” The best friends were hit with gay rumours since it was just them two boys working on the script together. That’s when Matt opened up about his views on gay actors in Hollywood and how being gay in the industry can also have an affect their careers.

Like what he said on “The Ellen Show,” Damon told The Guardian that it’s better if a person’s sexuality is kept private. The actor thought it makes for a better actor the less people know about you.

“Whether you’re straight or gay, people shouldn’t know anything about your sexuality because that’s one of the mysteries that you should be able to play,” Matt told The Guardian in an interview.
