Eminem Executive Produces ‘Southpaw’ Soundtrack As Jake Gyllenhaal Wows Cannes Film Festival Critics
Matthew Bruce Mathers III, famously known as Eminem, is set to executive produce the soundtrack of Antoine Fuqua’s “Southpaw,” which stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a boxer named Billy Hope opposite Rachel McAdams playing his wife.
On May 22, Shady Records announced that the “Southpaw” soundtrack that Eminem will executive produce feature new songs, which include “Phenomenal” performed by Slim and produced by DJ Khalil, Entertainment Weekly reported.
Prior to “Southpaw,” Eminem has worked for soundtracks or several movies including “Capture The Flag,” “21 Jump Street,” “Real Steel” and “Fast Five.” He also collaborated with Sia in “Guts Over Fear,” the soundtrack of “The Equalizer” starring Denzel Washington.
Joining Gyllenhaal and McAdams in the cast of “Southpaw” are Naomie Harris, Forest Whitaker, Clare Foley, Beau Knapp, Victor Ortiz, Miguel Gomez, Skylan Brooks, John Cenatiempo, Rowdy Brown, Oona Laurence and Grace Marie Williams.
Previously, Eminem was rumored to be part of the “Southpaw” cast but instead, it was his protégé 50 Cent along with Iggy Azalea’s “Black Widow” collaborator Rita Ora who are in the sports drama film, which was written by “Sons Of Anarchy” creator Kurt Stutter.
Before it hits theaters in the United States on July 24, “Southpaw” was shown at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where Gyllenhaal received rave reviews for his performance as a boxer whose life falls apart after the death of his wife.
Cannes Film Festival delegate general Thierry Fremaux even described Gyllenhaal's performance as an incredible one and one of his best performances. He said the actor is very extraordinary as he is having quite a career film after film, E! News reported.
For “Southpaw,” Gyllenhaal had to gain 15 pounds. He attended the screening of the film at the Cannes Film Festival wearing a Tom Ford black peak label O'Connor suit paired with a black and white tie, white dress shirt and black lace up shoes.
After ‘Southpaw,” Gyllenhaal is set to appear in the drama thriller “Everest” with Robin Wright and Keira Knightley and in the comedy drama “Demolition” with Naomi Watts and Heather Lind and Chris Cooper. In 2017, he will star in another drama thriller titled “Nocturnal Animals” with Amy Adams.
