‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ editor on sex quotient of the film

“Fifty Shades of Grey,” starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, undoubtedly features in the list of the steamiest movies of 2015 owing to its over-the-top explicit content, but the 90-Year-old editor, Anne Coates, thinks that the flick could have been raunchier.
"I thought it could have been a little more raunchy myself. Creatively, it was quite interesting because they were trying to get as sexy as they could and get an R rating. So we were very delicately going around some of the scenes," Coates told The Hollywood Reporter during a recent interview.
Coates was recently honored with the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award on Saturday, January 9 for her outstanding contribution to the industry. Interestingly, Coates has won series of the highest ranked awards, and has been nominated five times for the Academy Award for Film Editing. The ace editor has also won an Oscar for her work in David Lean's iconic epic “Lawrence of Arabia.”
Coates also believes that the role of the editors is misunderstood by many as people are likely to understate an editor's jon. Coates also opened up about her experience while working on “Fifty Shades of Grey” and her reaction when she was first offered to edit this erotic romantic drama film helmed by Sam Taylor-Johnson.
“It was kind of fun...I was surprised to be asked to do it, but I think it was because I did [Adrian Lyne's] “Unfaithful,” which was fairly sexy,” she exclaimed.
Apart from Coates, Lisa Gunning and Debra Neil-Fisher too were a part of the editing crew. Made with a budget of $40 million, the film went on to become the third-highest-grossing film directed by a woman as it raked in $166.2 million in North America and $569.7 million worldwide. Also, it became the fourth-highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.
Currently, the work is in progress for the second part of the “Fifty Shades” trilogy and the flick has been titled “Fifty Shades Darker.” It has been scheduled for a 2017 release and will be followed by the third part of the series titled “Fifty Shades Freed” in 2018.
