Football transfer news: Ex-Real Madrid president claims Cristiano Ronaldo might leave the club
Rumours of Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from Real Madrid have been further fuelled by ex-Real president Ramon Calderon, who has claimed a move away from the club is definitely possible for the Portuguese superstar.
Cristiano Ronaldo made his way from Sporting Lisbon to Manchester United back in 2003, scoring 118 goals in 292 appearances for the club. He also went on to win nine trophies at the club, lifting three English Premier League titles, two League Cups, one UEFA Champions League trophy, one F.A Cup, one Club World Cup trophy and one Community Shield. He was also the Ballon D’Or winner in 2008 and moved to Real Madrid for a then-record transfer fee of £80 million (AU $169.6 million).
The forward has gone to become a legend at Real Madrid as well, scoring a whopping 325 goals for the club in just 310 games over six seasons, breaking Raul’s record, who had taken 741 games and 16 seasons to get the landmark. He has also won the La Liga once with Real, along with the UEFA Champions League in 2013-14, and added two more Ballon D’Or titles to his name.
Earlier this week, respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague had claimed that there were plans being put in plans for Ronaldo’s exit, with Paris Saint-Germain the most likely destination. Now, Ramon Calderon has further fuelled speculation.
"I have heard rumours that there's strong PSG interest [in Ronaldo]. As the former president of Real Madrid, I hope that it never happens. But as someone who knows football, I think it could be possible. For now, Cristiano hasn't expressed [a desire to leave]. I think he will take a decision at the end of the season, depending on the titles won and the feelings he has. In the meantime, the mystery will continue," Calderon told Le Parisien in an interview.
Even considering he’s 30 years old now, Ronaldo is still likely to command a massive fee of around €100 million (AU $157.30 million).
