A tip from a meter reader about the horrible and unsanitary conditions at a house in Muncie, Indiana, led to the rescue of 46 bulldogs on Wednesday. What horrified rescuers was the discovery of 18 dead puppies and 6 reptiles inside the freezer.

The house is owned by 23-year-old Jacob Ryan Pelfrey, who was arrested and held on a $85,000 bond at the Delaware County Jail, reports Associated Press. According to Phil Peckinpaugh, director of Muncie Animal Shelter, the dogs were found inside cages filled with mud and faeces behind Pelfrey’s house. Although the bulldogs were not emaciated, the animals were frightened by the presence of people.

He said the house was a cross between a hoarder’s lair and a puppy mill. Peckinpaugh called Pelfrey’s place, named Jake’s Extreme Pets and Supplies, a dog hell.

“The smell we can both smell right now is the absolute worst. I have been in a lot of situations where I have seen a lot of horrible things and smelled a lot of horrible smells, and this is by far the worst,” The Indychannel quotes Peckinpaugh.

The county filed three counts of animal abuse and 20 counts of neglect of a vertebrate animal against Pelfrey. His neighbours were shocked of the charges because they believe Pelfrey loved the dogs.
