A women's group embracing traditional rights and family values has protested against Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird for making a statement in favour of gay rights.

The group called REAL Women of Canada called Mr. Baird's remarks "highly offensive‘‘ to conservative taxpayers. The group supports "traditional family and marriage," timescolonist.com reports.

Using Taxpayer Money for Personal Agenda

"Just who does John Baird think he is?‘‘ asked Gwendolyn Landolt, the vice president of Real Women of Canada.

She accused Baird of funnelling taxpayer money to ‘‘promote his own personal agenda and endeavouring to set standards of the laws of foreign countries,‘‘ reports The Canadian Press.

Landolt commented that Baird has tried to establish ‘‘homosexual rights are a ‘Canadian value,' adding "this applies only to himself and his fellow activists and the left-wing elitists."

She added that "other countries' sovereignty and dignity, rooted in stable family structures and religious faith, " emphasizing that these are "not conservative values and that of grass roots Canadians.‘‘

The group has also accused Mr. Baird of "destructive to the conservative base in Canada and causing collateral damage to his party," in an online report by the National Post.

Mr. Baird was also cited by Canadian Press as saying he has serious concerns about the a new Russian banning non-traditional family values during the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.

He believes the new law enacted by Russia and President Vladimir Putin will spur "incitement to intolerance, which breeds hate. And intolerance and hate breed violence.''

Canada: Criminalization of Gays Wrong

"Canada believes that the criminalization of homosexuality is wrong," Rick Roth, Mr. Baird's press secretary, said in an email, adding, "This is a position that is supported by a vast majority of Canadians," reported the National Post.

According to a representative from Mr. Baird's office, he said that he would be happy to meet with the Real Women of Canada to explain the government's "principled position ... against the suppression of fundamental freedoms around the world," reports The National Post.

President Vladimir Putin of Russia came up with a new law to silence "propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations" and critics say that this will lead to protests until the Winter Games from February 7-23.

President Barrack Obama of the United States of America scrapped plans to meet President Vladimir Putin of Russia after a row over granting asylum to intelligence leaker charged with espionage, Edward Snowden.

He commented that has "no patience" for discrimination against gay people. He reiterated that Russia and Vladimir Putin are aware that most countries participating in the Olympics would not tolerate gays and lesbians being given a cold shoulder. He was speaking on the sidelines of "The Tonight Show" hosted by Jay Leno.
