Andy Pettitte’s jersey no. 46 wil be retired by the New York Yankees club in Major League Baseball, or MLB to honour the former Yankees’ great who played in New York from 1995 to 2003, 2007–2010 and 2012–2013. Josh Pettitte, son of Andy, made the update on Twitter and has since gotten hundreds of favourites and re-tweets.

Josh Pettitte was selected by the Yankees in the 2013 MLB Draft as the 37th pick but chose to play for Baylor University in college rather than sign a pro contract. The celebration will be done on Aug. 23, 2015 when the left-hander will be honoured with a plaque in Monument Park in New York. Pettitte will be the 19th player who will be honoured in the club’s history, according to a report from MLB.com. All in all, it will be the sixteenth jersey number to be retired by the franchise.

Pettitte was a three-time MLB All-Star being named to the squad in 1996, 2001 and 2010, all when he played for the Yankees. Pettitte, who was the American League Championship Series Most Valuable Player, or ALCS MVP, in 2001 was a five-time MLB champion winning the World Series in 1996, 1998,1999, 2000 and 2009, also all with the Yankees. For his career, Petttitte had win-loss record of 256-153 with 3.85 ERA and 2,448 strikeouts. He had a brief stint with the Houston Astros from 2004 to 2006 but eventually found his way back with the Yankees.
