Showrunner Sam Esmail talked about what to expect in “Mr. Robot” Season 2 in a recent interaction with the press. He revealed that the next season will continue the “emotional journey” of the protagonist Elliot and will focus on him dealing with the events and revelations from the first season.

[Spoiler alert]

Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, Esmail revealed that the next season of his show will focus on how Elliot (Rami Malek) will try to “navigate his life” after finding out the identity of Christian Slater’s character on the show, Entertainment Weekly reports.

“ There will be a lot more backstory that will be shown, the timeline will get a little clearer,” Esmail teased. “It really is about Elliott trying to reconcile what this means in seeing Mr. Robot. The series is filling in the blanks of the past and the present of this character,” he added.

Elliot had realised in the previous season that he has been having delusions and the next season will apparently deal with how he copes with that realisation. Esmail also teased that “Mr. Robot” Season 2 will also come with a new set of twists.

The plot is expected to explore the economic impact after the collapse of a major company. The hacker group led by Elliot had managed to bring down Evil Corp in the previous season. To continue with the focus on making the TV series as authentic as possible, Esmail is said to have consulted economic experts to find out how to accurately show the economic impact of the events of the first season.

However, Esmail wants to focus on Elliot more than the plot of “Mr. Robot” Season 2. "I think the whole show has been about Elliot's emotional journey and I really wanted to focus on that and make it less about the plot,” EOnline quoted Esmail as saying. He also revealed that the character White Rose (BD Wong) will be coming back in the next season.
