Socialite Kim Kardashian and her rapper boyfriend Kanye West have come one step close to getting married as the couple announced their engagement on Monday in San Francisco.

Kanye dished out a sparkling 15-carat Lorraine Schwartz diamond ring for the mother of his child Kim and the couple had a gala evening filled with family and friends. But do you know their love story? Read more to find out!

You will be surprised to know that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West have known each other for almost a decade - yes it's been nine long years. The rapper and the reality star were in touch with each other all these years but began dating only in early 2012.

It was the year 2004 when Kanye met Kim for the first time when she was already married to Damon Thomas. They became friends then but didn't really stay in touch. According to Daily Mail, the rapper felt an attraction towards Kim's sexy legs when he first saw her with Paris Hilton in 2006. Kanye started having feeling for Kim but didn't pursue the matter as she was already married.

Kanye then went on with his life and got engaged to Alexis Phifer in 2006. Kim too carried on with her life and started dating football player Reggie Bush. But the two again met at the Intermix party in Beverly Hills in 2007.

Meanwhile Kanye split from Alexis in 2008 and started dating model Amber Rose. However he had all eyes for Kim Kardashian in 2009 even when she was sitting next to her then boyfriend Reggie.

"I just dreamed about being next to her," Kanye revealed on the final episode of the Kris Jenner show talking about 2009.

As destiny was bringing the two love birds together, Kim split from Reggie in 2010 and Kanye split from Amber in the same year. In December 2010 Kim and Kanye worked on Kim's music video Jam (Turn It Up) and they became closer.

But Kim had other plans in mind and announced her lavish wedding with basketball player Kris Humphries in 2011. However the couple could not continue their relation and broke up in 2011, barely three month after they tied the knot.

Soon Kanye and Kim were seen spending time with each other and were spotted holding hands in New York City, where they had several dinner outings where Kim dressed to impress the rapper. The couple went public with their relation at the Cannes Film Festival in France where they walked the red carpet. Soon after, the couple announced the pregnancy news and Kim gave birth to a beautiful baby North West on June 15.

Speculations about Kim and Kanye's marriage were rife when North West was born but Kanye proposed to the new mommy on her 33rd birthday in San Francisco's baseball stadium. It will be a third marriage for Kim but a first one for the rapper! So will Kim be third time lucky?
