Shawn Mendes leads Spotify’s 25 Under 25 list; Flume, Joel Adams join world’s most streamed artists under age of 25
Shawn Mendes has succeeded Ed Sheeran as the most influential music artist under the age of 25 after he earned over 25 million listeners on the music streaming service Spotify each month this year.
The 18-year-old Canadian singer-songwriter has topped Spotify’s Global 25 Under 25 list released Thursday. According to the Spotify Team, Mendes’ 2015 hit single “Stitches,” released on April 14, 2015 under his debut studio album “Handwritten,” has recorded 500 million streams during the scoring period.
Sheeran has kept the title since Spotify started ranking young artists three years ago. The 25-year-old British singer-songwriter was named as the most influential artist since 2014 while his “Thinking Out Loud” was lauded as the most streamed song of all time via the music streaming app.
Noticeably, Mendes did not join the 25 Under 25 ranks last year. In 2013, the guitar-playing pop artist attracted a following and a recording contract after regularly posting six-second clips of his song covers on video-sharing app Vine. (Read: Twitter is shutting down Vine)
Ariana Grande ranked next to Mendes despite having 27 million monthly listeners on Spotify. Her “Dangerous Woman” and “Into You” both earned two million streams each, while her “Side to Side” song with Nicki Minaj was listed among the Top 10 songs on Spotify’s global chart.
On the third spot is Chance the Rapper, who is the lone hip-hop artist on the list. The Spotify Team said Chance the Rapper’s “Coloring Book” mixtape is considered as one of the strongest releases of 2016. The Chicago rapper has over six million monthly listeners and registered over 60 million streams with his “No Problem” single with Lil Wayne and 2Chainz.
Meanwhile, Australian artists Flume and Joel Adams ranked 10th and 16th, respectively, on Spotify’s global list.
The 24-year-old record producer-disk jockey from Sydney has gotten over 13 million monthly listeners on Spotify, thanks to his latest hits “Say It” (feat. Tove Lo) and “Never Be Like You” (feat Kai). (Read: ARIA Awards 2016: Flume, Troy Sivan lead nominees)
For his part, the 19-year-old singer-songwriter from Brisbane has earned 10 million monthly listeners after only releasing one song on Spotify. His “Please Don’t Go” ballad has recorded over 210 million streams.
