$10 million found buried in South Korean garlic field
A farmers’ dream to elevate his family’s poor condition has been thwarted after police authorities put him behind bars for alleged possession of illicit money.
The farmer with the last name “Lee” was arrested Monday for burying $10 million in cash in his garlic field in Gimje which is about 160 miles south of Seoul. Police officers on Tuesday confiscated the money which they believe came from an illegal gambling website operation. In all, the gambling operation may have net them up to $15 million, reported UPI.
Lee, 52, is imprisoned with one of his two brothers-in-law while the other is on the loose. The future of the two seems unclear until today, since authorities have given no supplementary details of their charges as there are no other sources that could help give a sound investigation about the issue.
But the money found in the ground wasn't all the family was hiding. UPI said investigators interrogated Lee's family and later recovered about $1 million in the rental car of his son and more than $100,000 in the family's apartment in Jeonju, North Jeolla province.
