In 2013, 13-year-old Alfie Patten of Britain became a household name after reports came out that he was the country's youngest father. Although subsequent DNA tests showed that he didn't sire Maisie Roxanne, his life was never the same again as he became the poster boy for teen pregnancy and even had his face on condom wrappers.

Such circus-like atmosphere would hopefully not happen to a 12-year-old girl from Kalibo City in the Philippines who gave birth on Monday at the Dr Rafael S Tumbocon Memorial Hospital. Kalibo is the capital city of Aklan province, which includes the world-famous Boracay Beach.

According to Tempo, the elder sister of the Grade 7 student rushed her to the hospital on Sunday due to complaints of extreme stomach pain. The next day, to her family's surprise, she gave birth to a baby boy.

Her parent initially thought their daughter's frequent stomach pain was due to cancer, based on what quack doctors told them. They did not suspect that she was pregnant because her monthly menstruations were regular and as far as they knew, the girl didn't have a boyfriend.

Her parents' claim prompted the Social Welfare Department to ask the Philippine National Police to investigate if the baby is the product of rape. The department also did not permit media to interview the girl to protect her privacy and allow her to continue with her studies without experiencing discrimination.

The very young Filipina mother, however, did not break Philippine records for early childbirth. According to Tempo, the current record-holder is a 9-year-old girl from Turo, Bocaue, Bulacan, who gave birth on March 20, 2007. A week later, an 11-year-old girl from the same community in Bulacan province also gave birth.

The first Bulacan girl matches the record of a 9-year-old in Mexico.

While young motherhood before reaching their teens is still rare in the Philippines, teenage pregnancy is high, actually the highest in Southeast Asian as a growing number of young women enter puberty and enter into relationships as well as indulge in pre-marital sex during their high school years.

This is especially felt in rural Philippines and in poorer section of urban areas, while in contrast many educated Filipinas in their late 20s and 30s are imitating their Japanese counterparts and opting for a career instead of raising a family.
