Hiker Aron Ralston, the inspiration behind the James Franco-starrer “127 Hours,” has been arrested on charges of domestic violence. The 38-year-old motivational speaker, who cut his own arm with a pocket knife in 2003 when he was trapped inside a Utah canyon, is facing one count of assault and one count of “wrongs to minors.”

As The Denver Post first reported, Mr Ralston was arrested Saturday night at a residence owned by a Vita Shannon. Ms Shannon, 38, was also arrested at the same time and is facing the same charges.

Both Mr Ralston and Ms Shannon remain in Denver City Jail. As in cases of suspected domestic violence, defendants must appear before a judge before they can post bail bond.

Details on the pair’s arrest and charges are still unclear as of the time of writing.

He is due to appear in Denver County Court on Monday.

Mr Ralston made national headlines after surviving a hiking accident in April 2003. He was hiking through Blue John Canyon in Utak when his right hand was pinned and trapped against a canyon wall. As he did not inform anybody of his hiking adventure, there was no one who would be searching for him.

He spent five days trapped, trying to break free from the boulder. He was finally freed on the fifth day when he amputated his right forearm with a dull knife that he got free with a flashlight purchase.

He documented his life-changing experience in his autobiography “Between a Rock and a Hard Place,” and became the inspiration the 2010 drama “127 Hours.” Franco played him in the film.

Mr Ralston married Jessica Trusty in 2009. Their son Leo was born in February 2010.
