Spanish beauty queen Patrician Yurena shocked the nation on Saturday when she out herself on social networking site Twitter as a lesbian. She posted her photo and her lover, Vanesa Cortez, which was captioned "Romeo and Juliet."

The photo showed the pair cuddling in bed while staring lovingly in each other's eyes. Cortez is a singer disc jockey on the Spanish house circuit.

The 24-year-old Yurena was Miss Spain 2008 and Miss Spain 2013. She was also a Miss Universe 2013 first runner-up.

Yurena's revelation was accepted in social media, which led the beauty queen to thank people for understanding her sexual preference. She tweeted, "Thanks to everyone for the comments ... I published the picture spontaneously and in an impulsive manner."

With her admission of being in a lesbian relationship, Yurena became the first openly gay national beauty queen in Spain.
