Just in time for the love month, the romantic drama movie "The Vow" starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum topped the US box office chart even ahead of Valentine's Day.

The film has an estimated earnings of $41.7 million just over the weekend. It wouldn't also be a surprise that 70% of the audience was made up of women. Other top grossing movies include Denzel Washington's action thriller "Safe House" which is closely behind with $39.3 million.

The family adventure movie "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" was in third spot with $27.6 million.

According to box office analyst Paul Dergarabedian, it was the first non holiday weekend where four films opened with more than $20 million each. The other time when four released movie did that well was back in 2008 for the Christmas weekend.

"It felt like a summer weekend to me. This was like a great big valentine from Hollywood to the audience, or from the audience to Hollywood," Dergarabedian said.

"The Vow" tells the story of a young couple who met a tragic car accident that put the wife in a coma. When she wakes up, she cannot remember her husband anymore. Stricken with agony, he tries to relinquish their love and helps bring back the old feelings of her love to him. Catch the trailer to take a sneak peek of the movie.
