With zero upset victories in the previous round, the quarterfinals of the 2013 BNP Paribas Masters is set, featuring the top players in the world, and curiously, the same eight qualifiers who will be playing in the tennis season finale, the 2013 ATP World Tour Finals.

The penultimate tournament of the ATP season is held at the Palais Omnisports of Bercy in Paris and has a total prize pool of € 2,646,495.

To advance to the quarters, Stanislas Wawrinka had an easy victory over Spain’s Nicolas Almagro, 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 16. Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, dominated the final two sets in beating USA’s John Isner, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-2.

Djokovic has beaten Wawrinka in thirteen of 15 head-to-head match-ups, winning a dozen straight matches since a Wawrinka victory in 2006. The last three have come in the deeper rounds of three major tournaments and the last two have been absolute five-set classics.

The 26-year-old Serbian has beaten the 28-year-old Swiss at the semifinals of the 2013 U.S. Open (2-6, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4); Round of 16 of the 2013 Australian Open (at semifinals of the 2013 U.S. Open (2-6, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4) and the Round of 16 of the 2012 U.S. Open (6-4, 6-1, 3-1, retired).

Roger Federer won against Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber, 6-3, 6-4, in his Round of 16 match to set the quarters date with Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina. The latter beat Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov in three hard-fought sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Overall, Federer holds the edge against Del Potro, 13-to-5 in all-time match-ups. However, the Swiss legend has yet to win against the 25-year-old Argentine since the 2012 London Olympics.

Del Potro has won three straight since that time with wins at both finals of the Swiss Indoors Basel in 2012 and 2013. The other victory came the round-robin stage of the 2012 ATP World Tour Finals, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3.

The winner of the Federer-Del Potro match will clash with the victor in the Djokovic-Wawrinka tiff in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, world number one Rafael Nadal of Spain faces Richard Gasquet of France and Spain’s David Ferrer takes on Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych in the other quarterfinals matches.

The 2013 ATP World Tour Finals is scheduled from November 4 to 11 at the 02 Arena in London.

Andy Murray of Great Britain actually qualified for the World Tour event but was forced to withdraw because of a back surgery. France’s Gasquet replaces him in the season-ending tournament.
