The Swiss and Serbian have met 29 times in their careers with the 32-year-old Federer holding the slight edge, 16-13, in their head-to-head match-up. The pair met five times in 2012, but none this ATP season, marking the Paris tourney as their first meeting in 2013.
“Roger is still one of the ones to beat at every tournament. You just can’t underestimate him, even if he’s not exactly in the same form as when he was number one,” the 26-year-old Djokovic told the BNP Paribas Masters official website.
To advance to the semis, Federer defeated Kevin Anderson, 6-4, 6-4, in the Round of 32; beat Philip Kohlschreiber, 6-3, 6-4, in the Round of 16 and Juan Del Potro, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, in the quarterfinals.
For his part, Djokovic had wins over Pierre-Hughes Herbert, 6-2, 6-2, in the Round of 32; John Isner, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-2, in the Round of 16; and Stanislas Wawrinka, 6-1, 6-4, in the quarters.
Meanwhile, it’s an all-Spain affair in the other semis pairing when Nadal tries to retain his dominance over Ferrer. The 27-year-old Nadal has beaten the 32-year-old Ferrer in 20 out of 24 meetings in their careers.
This includes nine straight from Nadal since 2011 with the last Ferrer win happening in the quarterfinals of the 2011 Australian Open.
“I’m improving every day in this tournament and tomorrow is another day to keep improving,” said Ferrer of his 25th match-up with his compatriot.
To make the final four in Paris, Nadal beat Marcel Granollers, 7-5, 7-5, in the Round of 32; defeated Jerzy Janowicz, 7-5, 6-4, in the Round of 16; and Richard Gasquet, 6-4, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
Ferrer, meanwhile, had to go through Lukas Rosol, (6-0, 2-6, 6-3) in the Round of 32; Giles Simon (6-2, 6-3) in the Round of 16 and Tomas Berdych (4-6, 7-5, 6-3) in the quarterfinals.
