All it took was one goal as Manchester United defeated Liverpool in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday.

Javier Hernandez, aka Chicharito, delivered the decider with barely a minute in after the halftime break.

Wayne Rooney delivered a corner kick that found Chicharito inside the box, using his right foot to place it at the bottom right corner, beating Reds goalkeeper Simon Mignolet in the process.

Red Devils supporters, through United's Web site and their Twitter page, voted Rooney as "man of the match," garnering 59 per cent of the thousands of votes.

The England striker's form remains consistent throughout the games that he has suited-up for United in this year's campaign.

It was a tightly contested game as both teams created an almost equal share of chances with United and Liverpool amassing 18 and 17 total shots at goal, respectively.

Red Devils boss David Moyes admitted that he was pleased with the result and that it provided a certain degree of reliability after going down against the Reds on matchday 3 in the Premier League and after suffering a shocking 4-1 defeat against rivals Manchester City.

"It was a big game for us," Moyes told manutd.com.

"We lost at Anfield a few weeks ago and at the Etihad last week, so we wanted to put that right. Every game everyone says about me, it's the first at something or a monkey off my back or something else. It's going to be the way. I thought it was a really good game - an exciting game of football between the two teams."

Moyes also stated that he maximised his squad's depth coming into game as he fielded some seldom-used players in an attempt to make the players redeem themselves.
