Two players representing Australia are hoping they can pull off separate upset victories Thursday afternoon at the 2013 China Open.

Aussies Bernard Tomic and Marinka Matosevic battle Richard Gasquet and David Ferrer, respectively, in the Round of 16 stage of the tournament with a prize money of roughly $2,315,250.

The Tomic-Gasquet match-up is the most interesting pairing in this round. The Australian pulled the rug underneath the French in the Round of 32 of the 2013 Wimbledon Championships gaining the upset victory in four sets, 7-6 (7), 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (5).

Gasquet, who is currently ranked 10th in the ATP world rankings looks to avenge that London loss against Tomic, who is currently at 55th place in the rankings.

Tomic defeated home country bet Ze Zhang, 7-6, 6-4 in the opening round while Gasquet beat Florian Mayer of Germany, 6-3, 7-6 to advance to the Round of 16.

Overall, Gasquet holds the slight edge over Tomic, 2-1 in their all-time head-to-head meetings. Gasquet beat Tomic, 7-6 (1), 6-2 in the opening round of the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, California, USA in 2013 and then in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Thailand Open in straight sets, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

Meanwhile, another Australian aims for a quarterfinals seat as well when Marinka Matosevic tries to pull off the surprise against Spain’s David Ferrer, who is ranked the fourth best player in the world.

Marinka, who is ranked 56th in the ATP rankings, was born in Jajce, Bosnia-Herzegovina but resides in Melbourne and has represented Australia in his tennis career.

If both Australian indeed pull off the upsets Thursday, the country is assured of a semis appearance as Tomic and Matosevic belong to the same side of the draw and will meet in the quarterfinals.
