The 2013 Miss Universe finally came to an end with Miss Venezuela Gabriela Isler outshining 85 other contestants - including favorite Miss Philippines - to bag the top prize of the most coveted beauty pageant in the world in Saturday's coronation night at Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia.

Venezuela, who entered the pageant as the dark horse in the competition, came out of nowhere and stole the spotlight from favorites Miss Russia, Miss Poland, Miss Spain, Miss USA, and Miss Philippines, who topped the betting polls and generated enormous amount of interest online days ahead of the coronation night.

Isler accepted the diamond tiara from 2012 Miss Universe Olivia Culpo, and the million-dollar swimsuit made by Italian swimwear maker Yamamay.

Besting the Competition

Miss Venezuela's road to victory was not easy at all. In fact, Isler had to overcome her greatest 'fear' to reach her ultimate dream.

Venezuela booked solid scores from judges during the preliminary round of competition to secure her slot in the top-16 along with Costa Rica, Ukraine, China, Ecuador, Great Britain, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Spain, USA, Nicaragua, Switzerland, India, Brazil, and the Philippines.

These ladies competed again in the swimsuit competition, where representatives from Spain, Philippines, Great Britain, India, Brazil, USA, Ukraine, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Dominican Republic stood out.

Finally, 'the magic five' were unveiled with Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, Spain and Philippines all making it into the question and answer portion.

Venezuela, who reportedly tried to learn English for six months, decided to stick with her mother language in the Q&A portion. With an aid of interpreter, Isler apparently nailed the best answer.

"Fear is not negative. We should overcome all our fears and this in turn would make us stronger. As soon as we overcome our fears we can face any challenge,"

Receiving Backlash

From the final five contestants, only Miss Philippines Ariella Arida answered the question in straight English while the rest of Spanish-speaking contestants needed their respective interpreter to convey their answer.

Here's the question for Arida and her answer:

Q:What can be done about the lack of jobs for young people starting their careers around the world?

A:"We should invest in education & that's my primary advocacy. Education is the ticket to a good future."

In an interview on ANC, Arida's mentor Jhune Katigbak believed his student delivered well the message of the answer and stressed that she should have been given more credit for speaking the universal language.

"She did her best. I personally expected that she could get the crown. Still, we are happy for her."

Filipino Netizens Feels Arida Deserves Crown

Netizens voiced out their reactions on Twitter following Arida's third-runner up effort at Miss Universe 2013. While many has already accepted Miss Philippines' fate, others are still questioning the scores garnered by Arida despite being the only candidate to answer the question in English.

"Why @realDonaldTrump ?!? Ariella Arida was the only one who answered the question and she was radiant in her evening gown!!! Why?!?," said a pageant follower on Twitter.

"Still proud of Ariella Arida. But come on, 2 years in a row that the #philippines got robbed of the crown."

"We've been Robbed!! Booooooooo!!! You're still the winner and you gave the best answer!! We're very proud!! #MissUniverse2013 #AriellaArida."

Robbed or not, Miss Philippines did well in the grandest beauty pageant in the world. Meanwhile, Miss Venezuela deserves all the accolades and respect as she takes her reign as the most beautiful woman in the world.
