World number one Rafael Nadal, top-seed Novak Djokovic and the still-very popular Roger Federer are all still in contention in the 2013 Shanghai Masters and are through to the round of 16 in the tournament held at the Qi Zhong Tennis Center in the Minhang Disctrict in Shanghai, China.

Five other players join them in the next round to complete the top eight seeds, all of whom avoided the upset in the Round of 32.

Nadal of Spain easily beat Ukranian Alexandr Dolgopolov, 6-3, 6-2, in a match which ran for less than an hour. The 27-year-old Spaniard, who just recently wrested the #1 ranking off Djokovic, will face Carlos Berlocq of Argentina in the next round.

In two meetings, both in 2013, Nadal defeated the Argentinean twice— a 6-3, 6-3, in a Round of 32 victory at the Brasil Open and a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, quarterfinal win at the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.

Djokovic wants to keep up with Nadal and re-steal that world number one ranking. The 26-year-old Serbian took care of business in two easy sets as well with a 6-2, 6-0,, drubbing of Marcel Granollers of Spain.

The Shanghai Masters defending champion faces Italian Fabio next and is the heavy favourite as the former has racked up five straight wins against the latter and has only lost 2 out of 12 sets the pair have played in since 2009.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer found a bit of trouble against Andreas Seppi of Italy but nonetheless won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. The former world number one battles Gael Monfils in the Round of 16. The Frenchman won over Vasek Pospisil, 7-5, 7-6 (4), to get the R32 date with Federer.

Not surprisingly, Federer holds the 6-to-1 edge over Monfils in seven career meetings. The most recent one is at the 2011 French Open, where Fed took the quarterfinals match at 6-4, 6-3, 7-6(3).

Monfils’ sole win came in 2010 at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris in France where he won 7-6(7), 6-7(1), 7-6(4).

If Federer takes care of business against Monfils and if Djokovic wins his R32 match, the pair will meet in the quarterfinals on Friday.
