Being the hosts, England is allowed to field in two different teams in this tournament and they have proven so far that both are capable of winning the championship.

England A (Darren Appleton and Karl Boyes) and England B (Daryl Peach and Chris Melling) are both in the quarterfinals after wins over Italy (7-5) and Germany (7-0), respectively in the Round of 16.

The English pair of Appleton and Boyes also recorded a 7-0 shut-out in the opening round against Indonesia while Peach and Melling beat Portugal, 7-4 in their own opener.

England B gets the first crack in getting a semis slot against top seed Finland featuring Mika Immonen and Petri Makkonen.

Immonen and Makkonen are the defending champions winning the World Cup of Pool in Manila, Philippines in 2012 beating Poland in the title game. The Finnish pair beat Austria, 7-2 in the Round of 32 and Korea, 7-6 in the previous round.

England A meanwhile will face Taiwan’s Chang Jung-lin and Ko Pin-yi in their quarterfinal match. Taiwan avoided the upset against Belgium with a 7-5 win in the first round and destroyed Greece, 7-1 in the Round of 32.

Other quarterfinal matches pit the Philippines’ Lee Van Corteza and Dennis Orcollo versus Hungary’s Miko Balazs and Gabor Solymos; and Japan’s Naoyuki Oi and Lo Li-wen against Holland’s Niels Feijen and Nick Van den Berg.

After race-to-7 matches in the previous rounds the format now shifts to a race-to-9 in the quarterfinals and semifinals.
