2014 ATP World Tour Finals: Novak Djokovic Dominates Stan Wawrinka, 6-3, 6-0
In danger of possibly losing the year-end top ranking to rival Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic played true to form at the O2 Arena in London beating Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland in dominating straight sets, 6-3, 6-0 on Thursday. Djokovic remained a perfect 2-0 in the tennis season finale and is virtually into the semifinal round barring a lopsided loss in his final match in the group stage against Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych.
Even Djokovic was surprised with his own domination of his rival from Switzerland. The match was over in just 1 hour and a little over five minutes.
"I definitely didn't expect it, but hoped that I can play this way again and the match result can go this way for me," Djokovic stated via the tournament’s official website. "Obviously Stan wasn't feeling his best today, made a lot of unforced errors and had a low percentage of first serves in. On my side, I just played very solid from all over the court. I think I covered the court very well, got a lot of balls back, mixed up the pace, got him off the comfort zone. That's something that was part of my game plan.”
Djokovic took advantage of Wawrinka’s triple double faults in the opening set and broke the Swiss twice on three opportunities. Then he put the clamps down on Wawrinka in the second and final set of the match by shutting down the Swiss breaking all of the the latter’s serve in the 6-0 second set.
For Wawrinka, the London campaign is not over yet but he has to win over Marin Cilic of Croatia in his last match for a chance to advance to the final four. A loss would most likely mean getting eliminated although his chances will depend on the Djokovic vs. Berdych match-up.
"It was not my best match, that's for sure," Wawrinka admitted post-match. "He's playing really well. He's [has] confidence. He's not missing much. Today I think it was more about what I was doing. He put me in a position that I think a little bit too much. I was not really clear what I'm going to do, because he's doing everything well and he's returning well."
