2014 Australian Open (Day 11) Men’s Semifinals Preview and Prediction: Stanislas Wawrinka Will Defeat Tomas Berdcyh in 4 Sets
Giant-killer Stanislas Wawrinka is not done slaying big names. Next up for the Swiss is a semifinals date with Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the 2014 Australian Open on Thursday afternoon in Melbourne.
Two days after the biggest victory of his career-- the titantic upset of Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinal round—Wawrinka is back in the hard court, hoping to continue his success in the first Grand Slam of the year.
After 14 straight losses to the Serbian sensation, Wawrinka finally got the monkey of his back, winning in another five-set classic, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 9-7. He needed exactly four hours to dispose perhaps the world’s best tennis player, but it was all worth it for Wawrinka, whose last win against Djokovic came in 2006.
Indeed, it was a very special victory as he finally got one off Djokovic who won two heart-breaking and pulsating five-setters in 2013. Djokovic defeated Wawrinka, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals of the 2013 U.S. Open and 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 12-10, in the Round of 16 of the 2013 Australian Open.
Meanwhile, Berdych is coming off a big victory in his own right. The Czech ousted third-seed David Ferrer in the quarters in a rather easy 6-1, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, victory.
Tomas Berdych (Czech Republic) vs. Stanislas Wawrinka (Switzerland) at 7:30 pm AEDT
Match Odds: Berdych (2.1) vs. Wawrinka (1.74)
Game Handicap: Berdych (+1.5) vs. Wawrinka (-1.5)
All-time head-to-head (13 meetings): Wawrinka leads Berdych, 8-5
Wawrinka and Berdych went toe-to-toe in their first ten match-up against each other, splitting the head-to-head meeting, 5-5. Last year, 2013, was a different year, however, as Wawrinka took three of four meetings last year and won the last three matches.
The danger for Wawrinka is that he may already be satisfied with the huge upset against Djokovic and that means that the underdog Berdych can pull the rug underneath him while he is in cloud nine.
There is also the line of thought that Wawrinka is at an all-time high and that means the Swiss will be uber-confident come the semis. Certainly, a bad news for Berdych, especially if he can bring his A-game like he did in the Djokovic match.
Prediction: Wawrinka in four sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2
