Most top seeds have already played—and have survived-- their first round match or are playing as of press time. Two others, Juan Del Potro of Argentina and Andy Murray of Great Britain will be making their 2014 Australian debut Tuesday afternoon against separate opponents who wants to serve the improbable opening round upset.

Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG) vs. Rhyne Williams (USA)
January 14, 2014 (Tuesday) at 3:30 p.m. AEDT

Match Odds: Del Potro (1.02) vs. Williams (12.0)
Game Handicap: Del Potro (-9.5) vs. Williams (+9.5)

Del Potro and Williams have never met in any ATP match. Not really unexpected as the young 22-year-old American just turned pro in 2011. Similarly, the sports books betting lines are also not close owing to the fact that Del Potro has been a constant in the tour while Williams has only appeared in few major tournaments the past couple of years.

Williams’ career highlights include playing in the first round of the 2013 Australian Open after qualifying via the wild card. He lost to Florence Mayer of Germany but showed valiant effort in pushing it to five sets with a score of 2-6, 3-6, 6-2, 7-6, 6-1. The 22-year-old American also won a Dallas Challenger title and reached the semifinals of the ATP Houston in 2013.

Andy Murray (GBR) vs. Go Soeda (JPN)
January 14, 2014 (Tuesday) at 5:00 p.m. AEDT

Match Odds: Murray (1.02) vs. Soeda (17.0)
Game Handicap: Murray (-9.5) vs. Soeda (+9.5)

Murray is on the comeback trail and is reportedly setting “low expectations” about the Aussie Open this year. That could mean a couple of things, he wants other contenders to underestimate him or the Scot is just not fully healthy yet. The 26-year-old had a disc problem in his lower back and missed time since October 2013.

On a mission to gain a second round berth for the second straight year is Go Soeda from Japan. He got the luck of a draw in the 2013 Australian Open drawing with a wildcard qualifier in the first round. He lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, 3-6, 6-7, 3-6 in the succeeding round.

Soeda is the No. 2 Japanese player behind Ken Nishkori and broke into the Top 50 in the ATP rankings in 2012. He fell considerably in the rankings by the 2013 season but has done enough to qualify in Melbourne. Murray and Tsonga have never meet in any ATP match in their careers.
