The leaders atop Group A both had lopsided wins over their last opponents. Now, they come head to head in the battle of undefeated teams in Group A and what could possibly determine the top rankings and face a less talented squad in the cross-group eliminations rounds.

Team Spain again cruised to its second consecutive victory posting a convincing 30 point win, 90-60, over Egypt yesterday. They were paced by Oklahoma City forward Serge Ibaka who showed his vaunted mid-range game on the way to 18 markers. Brazil had an easier time against Iran after closing a nailbiter against European Champions France in their first game. The Brazilians won over NBA center Hamed Haddadi and the Iranians by a margin of 29 points through a balanced attack led by Alex Garcia with 12 markers.

Spain cannot expect to go on auto-pilot mode on this one. The front court of Brazil features three NBA starting caliber players in Anderson Varejao (Cleveland Cavaliers), Tiago Splitter (San Antonio Spurs) and Nene (Washington Wizards) and they will be more than enough to counter the Gasol Brothers, Marc and Pau, and naturalized player Ibaka. Brazil will be the first team to test the mettle of the host champions and will unveil if the 12-man deep Spanish squad can withstand a Brazilian team that is also equally tested and is vying for the medal rounds.

If we look at history, Spain still has the edge, totaling a 9-4 record in terms of head to heads against the Brazilians however, if we look at the last game dating back to June 8, 2012, Brazil won by 88-82, so no conclusions can be made if Spain will really dominate in this next game. Even Real Madrid gunner Rudy Fernandez concurs that they are facing a dangerous opponent and he takes special mention in stopping point guard Marcelinho Huertas and center Splitter.

"Splitter is playing at very high level, in fact, he has just won the NBA ring with his team (San Antonio Spurs)," said Fernandez per FIBA.com. "Marcelinho Huertas is a fantastic player, who can also score. I have suffered against him in the games against FC Barcelona this season."

Fernandez noted that they have to contain both players if they are to break away from Brazil as well as include in the game plan negating Nene and Barbosa, all experienced NBA players. He stressed that the South American teams love to play physical and that makes them tougher than the rest of the teams in Group A.
