2014 Wimbledon: Maria Sharapova Eases Through the First Round Beating British Samantha Murray

Maria Sharapova easily claimed victory over British athlete Samantha Murray in the first round of the 2014 Wimbledon Championships. Sharapova won in two straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.

Sharapova was reportedly pleased with her victory in the match that only lasted for 58 minutes. "It's such a quick turnaround," the 27-year-old Russian athlete told BBC Sport. "You just want to be physically rested but also have enough preparation and practice going into Wimbledon, it's a thin line, but I've recovered mentally and physically," she added.

Sharapova missed a few serves in the first 20 minutes but she proved to be the better player. Sharapova didn't let the Brit score after winning a breakpoint chance early on the match. It has turned to a one-sided match. Sharapova earned points without trouble as Murray committed successive faults.

Murray, who is the niece of defending champion Andy, called the Sharapova match an amazing break. She said she tried to play her best and be "aggressive," but she admitted that her performance wasn't just good enough. By far, Sharapova is the highest-ranked athlete that Murray has ever played against in her entire professional tennis career. "It was really good to experience what that's like, playing someone of her standard who really comes at you to just see how I deal with it," Murray told Wimbledon reporter Helen Gilbert.

Sharapova will face Switzerland's Timea Bacsinszky in the second round. Sharapova has previously played and won against Bacsinszky in the quarterfinals of the Zurich tournament in 2006.

Sharapova is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of her first Wimbledon win. She is still going strong a decade after winning in one of the most upsetting defeats in the history of tournament, beating two-time defending champion Serena Williams then. Will Sharapova be able to take home the trophy for the second time?
