2016 Brisbane International: Day 4 women’s singles R2 results; Day 5 schedule
Swiss rising tennis star Belinda Bencic is the second seeded player to bid farewell in Brisbane following compatriot Timea Bacsinszky’s first round elimination on Sunday. The 18-year-old lost to American qualifier Samantha Crawford, 7-5 7-5 on day four of the women’ singles event on Show Court 2 on Wednesday.
Former champion Victoria Azarenka is also through to the quarterfinals after beating lucky loser Ysaline Bonaventure, 6-3 6-2. Bonaventure replaced top seed Simona Halep, who withdrew before her first match due to leg injury.
Azarenka was put to a tough match that lasted one hour and 27 minutes on Pat Rafter Arena on Wednesday. The Belarusian will face yet another tough match against Italian Roberta Vinci, who stunned Serena Williams in the US Open semifinals last year.
“Obviously she’s (Roberta) been playing really well and showing great results,” Azarenka said of Vinci. “I think you can see improvement in her game.”
Meanwhile, Germans fourth seed Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic are also through to the last eight. Kerber beat Madison Brengle 6-3 6-0 and to reach her fourth consecutive time in Brisbane.
Petkovic, on the other hand, scored her 11th straight win over a Russian player. Petkovic defeated Ekaterina Makarova to seal her spot in the next round 7-5 6-4. Makarova previously defeated Margarita Gasparyan, who replaced defending champion Maria Sharapova (withdrew before her match due to wrist injury).
