The 2016 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show: The Angels debut in the City of Lights [PHOTOS]
The 2016 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was held in Paris on Wednesday evening. It was a show of firsts in many aspects that ranged from location, to looks, the girls and the musical acts.
It was the first time that the Angels graced the City Of Lights. The show was held at Paris’ Grand Palais, which normally hosts Chanel’s runway shows during fashion week. But that was not the only thing that the Angels debut that night. In an interview with Refinery 29, Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show hairstylist Sarah Potempa unveiled that, for the first time, the girls would be sporting their natural hair on the runway as well.
The Victoria’s Secret waves have somewhat become an institution almost as big as the brand itself. But when Maria Borges made history last year by being the first model to walk the runway in her natural locks, the team decided to embrace it. “We're giving a carefree approach to the length and type of curl,” Potempa told the publication. “Some women with shorter hair, maybe a lob, will walk with that hair. We're not gonna add extensions to make it super-long.”
The show opened with U2’s “Vertigo” playing on the speakers and the girls dressed in Chinese-themed ensembles. The looks were as well made and as lavish as they always and were completed with Brian Atwood-embroidered boots.
A few girls into the show, Lady Gaga got on stage with a soulful rendition of “Million Pieces.” Bruno Mars followed with “Chunky,” and Bella Hadid was serenaded by ex The Weeknd with “Starboy.” Lady Gaga then came back with “A-Yo” and “John Wayne.”
This year, Jasmine Tookes became the third black Angel to wear the fantasy bra. "It is so beautiful. It's covered in white diamonds and emeralds and it has about 9,000 gemstones," she told USA Today. "So stunning."
Balmain designer Olivier Rousteing was front-row and beamed at Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner as they walked the runway. "It's exactly what I always wish for — fashion, pop culture and music mixed together and all the girls that I love out on the runway,” he told The Hollywood Reporter.
However, no one was probably more proud than Yolanda Hadid, who watched both her daughters effortlessly walk down the runway. "I just want them to enjoy the night," she said.
