Step aside, Samsung Galaxy S4, BlackBerry Z10 and iPhone 5S rumours. Facebook is creating noise once more, but not because of another change to its user interface but due to three surprises for the 1 billion members of the world's most popular social networking site.

Surprise # 1- A Facebook Smartphone?

Mashable reported on Friday that Facebook sent out to media an Android event invitation for April 4, Thursday, at the company's Menlo Park campus in California.

To keep the press excited, without revealing details apparently to prevent leaks, the invite seen below merely said "Come See Our New Home on Android" and there was no further description on the invitation.

The intriguing invitation made Mashable writer Emily Price revive speculations about Facebook coming up with a modified version of an Android smartphone with FB features through a partnership with HTC.

However, she dashed the speculations since Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg himself said in September 2012 when the rumours first came out that a Facebook-branded smartphone is a wrong strategy for the company.

That speculation leads FB followers to . . .

Surprise # 2 - A Second Campus

On the same day that Facebook sent the invitation, CNET reported that the Menlo Park City Council officially approved groundbreaking rites for the second FB campus.

The 433,555 square-foot edifice got a unanimous 4-0 vote from the council. Mercury News said the building was designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry.

The second campus would be beside Facebook's current campus on Menlo Park which sits on 22 acres of land. The new campus could accommodate up to 3,400 more staff.

Besides the second campus, the city council also okayed in April 2012 Facebook's plan to expand its headquarters, although construction has yet to begin. To get city hall's final approval for the office expansion, FB needs to make a one-time $1.1 million payment to be used for city capital improvement projects and another $500,000 donation for a fund that would serve the needs of residents in specific Menlo Park communities.

Mr Gehry designed the famous Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

Surprise # 3 - 10-Digit Tax Bill for Zuckerberg

However, it appears that FB must shell out more than the earlier figures cited since the Internal Revenue Service had a $1.1 billion 2012 tax bill for the young billionaire. The assessment is based on the paper value of FB's IPO in 2012 at $13 billion and his purchase of 60 million shares at 6 cents per share when he exercised his stock option, CNN reported.

His stock option income alone added $2.3 billion to Mr Zuckerberg's taxable income, which brings to 48.3 per cent his total tax rate broken down into 35 per cent for the federal tax and 13.3 per cent for the California rate.
