An 82 year-old Colombian woman got shocking news when she visited a hospital in Bogota after suffering stomach pains. It is reported that the woman is experiencing pains due to a rare condition called "stone baby". According to the reports, the woman has been carrying a 40 year-old fetus inside her old body.

Several media outlets reported that the woman is suffering from a rare problem also called as "lithopedion" wherein the unborn child starts to develop outside the woman's womb. Earlier, it was believed that the woman was suffering from stomach bug, but later in the scans the real reason was discovered. The scans showed that the fetus had calcified over the period of time.

According to the reports, the condition is so rare that less than 300 cases have been reported of this condition in the entire medical literature. The condition occurs when the fetus gets implanted in the abdomen and outside the uterus like that in ectopic pregnancies. According to Huffington Post, the cases of fetus growing inside the abdomen are as frequent as once in every 11,000 pregnancies. Moreover, the condition of lithopaedian occurs only in 1.5% to 1.8% of these cases. This condition is said to be dangerous for mothers as it can cause internal hemorrhages as a side effect.

Dr. Kemer Ramirez of Tunjuelito Hospital in Bogota believed that the woman was suffering from gallstones. Only later did they discover a tumor in her abdomen which turned out to be a 40 year-old calcified fetus.

"This happens because the fetus does not develop in the uterus because it has moved to another place. In this case, the abdominal part of the woman is not a viable (place) and this is what happened, a calcified fetus because the body is generating defense mechanisms and it is calcified until it stays there encapsulated," explained Dr. Kemer Ramirez while speaking to NTD about the rare case of the 40 year-old fetus found in the 82 year-old woman.

Lithopedion or "stone baby" is an extremely rare condition. The very first case of a stone baby was reported in 1582 in an autopsy. The last one was reported in China, where a 92 year-old woman was carrying a calcified fetus for 60 years.

It is reported that the Colombian woman will now undergo surgery that will remove the 40 year-old calcified fetus from her 82 year-old body. The fetus is now composed of just dead tissue.
