'47 Ronin' 2013: Keanu Reeves Epic Film Fails at the Christmas Box Office [WATCH]
The Many Epic Failure of Keanu Reeves’s “47 Ronin”
Keanu Reeves’s epic film, “47 Ronin” has failed at the Christmas box office after raking in $10.7 million on its first two days at the US box office Thursday. According to news.com.au, the film by Carl Rinsch also failed in Japan when it opened in the East Asian country earlier this month.
A separate report by The Hollywood Reporter noted that the film may result in U$175M-loss after “47 Ronin” bombed at the box office. THR noted that the film could 2013’s “second- biggest miss financially,” trailing behind “The Lone Ranger” with the recorded budget at U$190.
Figures show that “Ronin” grossed only $7 million on Christmas day and increasingly decreased for another 48 percent on Thursday, Dec. 26, landing on Top. 8 on the Box Office rankings.
The film industry experts forecasts estimate “Ronin” to earn approximately between U$20 million and U$21 million in its opening weekend. This is described as “poor” by the box office observers, said THR with its recorded expenses at U$175 million. Critics expect the film to rake in an estimated earnings between U$50 million and $65 million domestically.
Five days after it hit international theatres, “Ronin” recorded earnings only at U$12.8 million, half of the earnings from 22 theatres worldwide came from Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.
The film has been facing some challenges leading up to its release. According to news.com.au, Universal was “forced to write down the cost of the film,” requiring reshoots. Its release date had apparently been pushed back not once but twice in one year.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, officials from the Universal Pictures had to explain their accounting process before the film release.
"Universal Pictures regularly evaluates its film slate for potential adjustment. In the case of 47 Ronin, we adjusted film costs in previous quarters, and as a result, our financial performance will not be negatively impacted this quarter by its theatrical performance,” said THR citing a statement from Universal.
“47 Ronin” is a group of samurai who came out to “avenge the death and dishonor of their master from a ruthless shogun.” The epic film is Carl Rinsch’s first directorial project. Written by Chris Morgan and Hossein Amini, “Ronin” stars Keanu Reeves, Hiroyuki Sanada, Kô Shibasaki, among others.
