Many parents today grew up to classic films that formed much of their happy childhood. In the same way, they wish to share the joy and experience with the young ones.

Although there are so many stories that are worth introducing to the new generation, here are the top five classic movies that parents find important for their children to see.

1. The Wizard of Oz (1939)

The 1939 classic was based on the book by L. Frank Baum and features the adventure of Dorothy Gale and her three valiant companions -- the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion and the Scarecrow. The film has become a part of American culture and teaches camaraderie, having no place like home and traits like intelligence, courage and heart.

2. Mary Poppins (1964)

In an article by Buzz Feed, many parents said they adore Julie Andrews and her classic roles in unforgettable films, like "Mary Poppins." The film is a great introduction to musical hits for children. The book series was made into a movie by Walt Disney in 1964, featuring a magical nanny and several catchy songs.

3. The Princess Bride (1987)

The film is a combination of adventure, romance, comedy and fantasy and also features songs that children would love to sing with. According to the author William Goldman, "I've gotten more responses on The Princess Bride than on anything else I've done put together -- all kinds of strange outpouring letters. Something in The Princess Bride affects people."

4. The Goonies (1985)

The classic film tells the story of a group of kids who try and save their home from getting foreclosed by finding a pirate treasure map and searching for hidden treasures. In a blog post by The Wall Street Journal, parents want their children to watch "The Goonies" to inspire them to be creative and seek adventures out of the house instead of playing computer games all day.

5. Peter Pan (1953)

The popular animated film was produced by Walt Disney and has been a favorite by children and parents alike through the decades. The story is about a boy "who wouldn't grow up" and fights pirates in a fantasy place called Neverland. The movie contains a number of amusing songs for children, as well as exciting scenes that encourage children to use their imagination.

Several other classic movies recommended for children are mostly produced by Walt Disney, such as "The Lion King," "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," and "Sleeping Beauty." Many of these films were created from 1920 to 1950.
