5 Classic Nintendo Games That Shaped The 90s
Nintendo was the top video game console in the 90s. Some of the most popular game titles of the era moved on to more advanced gaming systems in 3D and continue to capture the hearts of next-generation gamers. Here are classic Nintendo games from two decades ago.
1. Mario
Super Mario Bros. was based on the 1983 arcade game Mario Bros. which featured two Italian-American plumbers, Mario and Luigi, who explore eight worlds of the Mushroom Kingdom to save Princess Toadstool from the dragon, King Koopa. The characters wear their signature red and green caps and jumpsuits and consume mushrooms to gain life and power.
2. Commando
Commando is a shooting game which featured Super Joe, a soldier dropped off by a helicopter in a jungle to fight numerous enemy soldiers on his own. He has a submachine gun with unlimited ammo and a number of hand grenades. The soldier moves through various levels to accomplish specific missions.
3. Donkey Kong
This is a platform game where players attempt to maneuver the main character, Jumpman (who later turned out to become Mario), across a variety of obstacles and platforms. Similar to Mario, the character aims to save Lady from the giant ape, Donkey Kong. The game is one of the best titles of the Golden Age of Video Arcade Games.
4. The Legend of Zelda
This is a fantasy action-adventure game that features several puzzle-solving and action challenges. The main character is Link, who is tasked to save Princess Zelda and Hyrule from a thief named Ganondorf. The character earns special items and bonuses upon accomplishing side quests and main missions.
5. Pac-Man
Pac-Man is one of the few games that are still played in its original version until today. The arcade game featured a yellow round character, Pac-Man, which appears like a head with a mouth, going through a blue maze and eating pac-dots or pellets. Pac-Man must generally avoid the four enemies that roam the maze. There are also four larger pellets that temporarily allow Pac-Man to eat his enemies. A level is won by eating all of the dots in the maze.
