Being famous and successful does not mean that one has a perfect and clean record. Some of the world's most renowned and beloved celebrities actually spent time behind bars.

Here are five of them and the reasons they got jailed.

1. Martha Stewart

One of America's favorite homemakers received the minimum sentence of five months in prison plus another five months of home confinement in 2004. In a report by The New York Times, the billionaire served time for lying to federal investigators regarding a sale of stock, referring to it as a minor personal matter. She was confined at Alderson Federal Prison Camp in West Virginia.

2. Jordan Belfort

The popular film "The Wolf of Wall Street", top-billed by Leonardi DiCaprio, was actually based on the life of Jordan Belfort. In a report by NYMag.com, the stockbroker was sentenced for over 20 years for money laundering.

3. Mark Wahlberg

Wahlberg had quite an exciting youth, being in trouble with the Boston Police Department for about 25 times when he was a teenager. He had a variety of offenses, such as drug possession and use, harassment cases and even attempted murder. He pleaded guilty to assault and was sentenced to two years. He served 45 days in Suffolk County Deer Island House of Correction.

4. O.J. Simpson

The former NFL star was sentenced to 33 years in prison with a minimum of 9 years without parole in 2008. He was acquitted of the charges of murder against his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman but was later imprisoned again for armed robbery and kidnapping. In a report by USA Today, he has spent five years in Nevada prison and recently won a parole although he might stay behind bars until 2017.

5. Frank Sinatra

One of the greatest crooners of all time was arrested in 1938 by the sheriff of Bergen County, New Jersey. According to Thesmokinggun.com, his offense was carrying on with a married woman, which is now referred to as adultery. The case was dismissed later on.
