More frequently, film sequels do not usually do well and can even tarnish the reputation of the first box office hit. However, there are exceptions wherein fans clamor for more updates, changing lone movies into a franchise success.

Here are 5 movies that decided to go for a sequel and somehow succeeded.

1. "Star Wars"

George Lucas created the film series, which consist of two trilogies. The first film was released in 1977 and the franchise has grown considerably through the decades, becoming one of the most famous films of all time. One of the main reasons why the sequels have become a huge success is because of the "Star Wars" galaxy and a great storyline where adults and children alike can relate to different characters. "Star Wars VII" is in the works and said to launch in 2017.

2. "Alien"

The first film was featured in 1979. It was created by Ridley Scott and featured an extraterrestrial being that attacked a spaceship crew. Many fans loved the movie and it became a box office hit, spurring the creations of sequels "Aliens" in 1986, "Alien 3" in 1992 and "Alien Resurrection" in 1997. A collaboration with another successful film "Predators" was also made in the hit "Aliens vs. Predator."

3. "Resident Evil"

The film series was based on the popular video game and is known to be a pioneer of zombie movies. The first film was released in 2002 and starred Milla Jovovich. The movie was warmly received by fans, spurring the creation of more sequels namely "Resident Evil: Apocalypse" in 2002, "Resident Evil: Extinction" in 2007, "Resident Evil: Afterlife" in 2010 and "Resident Evil: Retribution" in 2012. In a report by Screenrant.com, the sixth movie in the series will still star Milla Jovovich and is expected to launch in 2015.

4. "Meet the Parents"

The 2000 comedy was a hit among movie fans because of the unique relationship that the lead character, played by Ben Stiller, had with his in-laws. Many people could easily relate with the family dynamics, spurring the creation of sequels "Meet the Fockers" in 2004 and "Little Fockers" in 2010.

5. "American Pie"

The teen series featured the life and struggles of the lead actor, played by Jason Biggs, from his high school days until he reaches his 30s. The first film was shown in 1999 and was a pop culture success. "American Pie 2" was released in 2001 and "American Wedding" was released in 2003. The fourth film, "American Reunion," was released in 2012. According to Metro, the series remained popular especially with fans who also grew along with the cast of the movie.
