5 Foods Pets Should Never Eat -- And Why
Many pet owners are not aware that the treats they give their pets can actually be detrimental to their health.
On several occasions, pets have been poisoned by the elements in regular grocery-store food. It is important to know more about these sources first to keep your furry friend safe for life.
Here are the types of food that your pet should never, ever, ingest.
1. Chocolate
Chocolates, in any form, should not be given to pets because they contain methylxanthes. Other products like coffee also contain this substance, which can lead to vomiting, abnormal heart rhythm, seizure, diarrhea and excessive urination. The darker the chocolate, the higher the amount of methylxanthine. A study published on Veterinary Technician in 2001 showed that methylxanthine can indeed have a lethal effect on animals.
2. Avocado
Avocados have Persin, which can lead to diarrhea and vomiting. In a report by ASPCA.org, small animals are especially prone to avocado poisoning due to symptoms like fluid accumulation in the heart and difficulty breathing. Many pets can die from the fruit.
3. Raw or undercooked meat and bones
Some owners feed their pets with the BARF diet. "BARF" stands for bones and raw food. However, these can contain bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella that can cause disease to pets. Bones may also break and splinter, causing pets to choke or puncturing the digestive tract.
4. Milk and dairy products
Pets do not properly break down lactose because their systems do not have sufficient amounts of the enzyme lactase. Some of the associated symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps and even food allergies. There are milk substitutes available that will be better for pets and their young.
5. Xylitol
Xylitol is a sweetener in food products like candy, baked items and also toothpaste. However, pets can suffer from liver failure, hypoglycemia, toxicosis and lethargy by consuming the substance. In a study published on ASPCA.org, the effects on the liver of pets after ingesting xylitol can happen within 24 to 48 hours. Some pets can die after suffering from serious symptoms.
Other products like garlic, yeast dough, salt, raisins, mushrooms, alcohol and nuts should also not be given to pets to avoid the development of diseases and other life-threatening symptoms.
Are you feeding your pets right? Maybe it's time for a change.
