Individuals who are color blind will face various challenges especially in certain jobs. Some institutions will completely prohibit color blind people from working to prevent risks to both the employee, his colleagues and clients.

Here are five jobs from where you may be disqualified because you can't tell your colors correctly.

1. Driver

One of the biggest problems that color blind drivers have is distinguishing traffic lights. They will not be able to tell whether it is time to go, get ready or step as the light colors change. Some parking spaces have automated slots where you can tell from afar whether a slot is occupied or not just by looking at the green or red light from afar.

Color blind individuals will not be able to distinguish until they actually see the parking space. When driving behind another vehicle, the rear lights will usually turn red when the brakes are hit. Color blind drivers will not get the necessary warning, thereby leading to road accidents.

2. Chef

Although some individuals can cook by using their sense of taste and smell, color is an important part of cooking. Many chefs will rely on the color of the meat or fish when buying from the local market to know whether it is fresh or not. They also need to see the color determine how well the meat is cooking. Chefs also need to see the colors of vegetables, fruits and herbs to make sure that they are using the right one and whether these are ripe or raw. Color blindness can increase the risk of making mistakes in the kitchen.

3. Doctor

In a study published in the British Journal of General Practice, determining color is important in diagnosing patients, particularly in the severity of the disease and the treatment process. Doctors have to be tested for CVD or color vision deficiency to ensure that they are competent and can diagnose patients properly.

4. Electrician

When working on electrical systems and breaker systems, each wire will be color-coded so you have to be careful not to cut or connect the wrong wires together. Being color blind will increase the risk or even cause accidents like fire if wires and circuits are not properly fixed.

5. Flower arranger or landscape artist

You may be disqualified from putting plants and flowers together because the work requires a keen eye and attention to detail. Even though you might have an idea about the colors of certain plants, putting the shades together will require full knowledge on a color wheel to have the best results.

According to research published in the Wall Street Journal, there are varying degrees of color blindness so people can still identify colors, although there may be differences in the shades or colors that they can or cannot completely identify.
