Parents travelling with kids, beware. A five-month-old American-Canadian baby died on Wednesday night at the Alicante airport in southeast Spain after being placed on a stationary luggage conveyor belt. Without his mother noticing it, the machine came alive and started to move on.

The infant was then carried off to the entrance of the bag drop and became trapped in the machine.

Authorities believed the American mother intended to reach for something that's why she rested her child and his baby carrier on the conveyor belt. Unfortunately, the mean weight of the carrier instantly activated the machine.

This particular machine was reserved for the collection of larger suitcases, strollers and musical instruments.

"The airport medical service tried to resuscitate the baby but they could not do anything," an airport spokeswoman said.

"It was about two o'clock in the morning, on the belt for retrieving special baggage, where children's push chairs and large items come out."

The baby was declared dead at the scene. "He was crushed by the conveyer belt and it killed him."

The whole episode only took seconds. The mother didn't have much of a chance to react properly and in time, according to witnesses.

The mother, along with an older son, had just touched down at the Alicante-Elche Airport aboard an Easyjet aircraft from London Gatwick. They were off for a vacation in the nearby town of Denia on Spain's Costa Blanca.

After disembarking the plane shortly before midnight, they entered the terminal and went straight to the baggage claim area.

His Canadian father was outside in the airport's arrivals gate, waiting for his family.
